Covering more than 2,000 km² in Karamoja, Pian Upe is Uganda’s second-largest protected area and one of East Africa’s best-kept secrets. Its sweeping savannah, rocky hills, and acacia woodlands shelter cheetah, Nubian giraffe, Uganda’s only roan antelope, and over 525 bird species, including the rare Karamoja apalis. The reserve also overlaps with Lake Opeta, a RAMSAR wetland that hosts thousands of waterbirds.

In 2022, a historic Co-management Agreement united Space for Giants, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Karimojong Overland Safaris, and nine district governments in a shared mission to restore and protect Pian Upe. Today, it is a wilderness on the rise, where wildlife is returning, communities are engaged, and visitors can experience Uganda’s wild heart.
